Companies raise $210m in VC funding in 2019 so far
Global clean energy communications and consulting firm, Mercom Capital Group, has released its report on funding and mergers & acquisitions (M&A) activity for the Battery Storage, Smart Grid, and Energy Efficiency sectors for the first quarter (Q1) of 2019. In Q1 2019, $210m was raised by Battery Storage, Smart Grid, and Energy Efficiency companies, a decrease from the $472m raised in Q1 2018.
Partnership to fuel fleet with city waste
The City of Oakland and Neste have announced that waste feedstock from the city is now being converted to Neste MY Renewable Diesel and fuels the city's fleet. The City of Oakland, Neste, fuel distributor Western States Oil and local collectors for used cooking oil joined forces to gather waste cooking oils from restaurants and other businesses in the Oakland metropolitan area and convert it to fuel the city’s fleet.
Success in Japan with automotive semiconductors
According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Infineon Technologies increased its automotive business in Japan by almost 25% in 2018. It thus grew faster than any other of the top ten automotive semiconductor suppliers in the country. Japan accounts for approximately ten percent of global car production.
Rohde & Schwarz wins airport security scanners order
Rohde & Schwarz has secured a 5-year Framework Agreement with MAG to supply the latest generation of R&S QPS201 security scanners to Manchester, London Stansted and East Midlands airports. MAG is the UK’s largest airport group, with over 60 million passengers every year to its three airports.
MOSFETs enables energy savings for inverters in AC systems
A new lineup of its PrestoMOSTM series of 600V super junction MOSFETs that includes 30 new models, has been announced by ROHM. This series increases design flexibility while maintaining the industry’s fastest reverse recovery time (trr) optimised for EV charging stations and motor drive in home appliances such as refrigerators and Air Conditioners (ACs).
Tektronix names Newcombe as President
In a management reshuffle Tami Newcombe has been promoted to President of Tektronix, and Marc Tremblay who was named that role earlier this year is instead becoming President of Fluke. Both companies are owned by Fortive. Newcombe joined Tektronix in early 2017 as Commercial President and has been responsible for leading global sales and marketing.
Arrow signs up to Qualcomm's Smart Cities Program
Arrow Electronics is to participate in the Smart Cities Accelerator Program of Qualcomm Technologies which encourages the global acceleration of edge compute, 5G appliances and NB-IoT distributed sensors. Qualcomm Technologies is promoting a library of Smart City solutions that combine existing mobile broadband networks while re-imagining existing infrastructure in cities around the world.
Accelerating IoT development for billions of devices at scale
IoT sensors are being infused into just about everything, from industrial equipment to consumer devices, and increasingly these devices are connecting to the cloud. By 2020, Gartner predicts there will be more than 20 billion connected devices. In April 2018, Microsoft announced it is investing $5bn in IoT and the intelligent edge over the next four years.

Driving simulator manufacturer expands its UK facilities
UK-based driving simulator manufacturer, Ansible Motion has secured a grant towards its facilities expansion through the New Anglia Small Grant Scheme, which is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The expansion will see Ansible Motion double its office space at the Hethel Engineering Centre for the design, validation and manufacturing of its proven simulator and testing technologies.
