Police roll out facial recognition technology
South Wales Police have confirmed their intention to use facial recognition technology – rolling the application out to 50 police officers for an initial three-month trial. This will enable them to take a snapshot and analyse it immediately to answer the pressing question, “Are you really the person we’re looking for?”
European semiconductor sales in the second quarter 2019
European semiconductor sales in the second quarter 2019 reached $9.800bn, according to the European Semiconductor Industry Association (ESIA) reported based on the latest WSTS figures. These results represent a 4.7% decline from the previous quarter. European sales of sensors and microprocessor units showed strong growth in June compared to the previous month (6.8 and 2.4% respectively) and grew faster than in the other regions worldwide.
R&D Facility discovers benefits of advanced applications development
Nano Dimension has announced that the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) has become the first R&D facility in the UK to purchase Nano Dimension’s DragonFly LDM precision additive manufacturing system for electronics. MTC will use the Lights-Out Digital Manufacturing System to additively build electronic components.
Large capacity energy storage system EPC
The technology group Wärtsilä has signed an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract for a 100 MW/100 MWh total capacity energy storage project in South East Asia. The energy storage system facility, including the Greensmith GEMS advanced software platform and GridSolv, will be used for grid support purposes. The order was booked with Wärtsilä in Q2.
Bloodhound LSR to run at Hakskeen Pan track in Autumn 2019
The Bloodhound Land Speed Record project today announced plans to run the Bloodhound LSR car for the first time on its dry lake bed race track at Hakskeen Pan, Northern Cape, South Africa, in October 2019. Following successful 200mph (320km/h) UK runway trials at Cornwall Airport Newquay in October 2017, the team will be targeting 500mph (800km/h) – a key milestone on the journey to setting a new world land speed record.
Nokian Tyres’ US factory produces first test tyre
Nokian Tyres has produced the first test tire at its factory in Dayton, Tennessee, USA. The first tyre, a Nokian eNTYRE 2.0 in size 205/55R16, marks the beginning of trial production, as Nokian Tyres remains on schedule to start building tires for commercial sale in the early part of next year.

RoHS 3 compliance completed for aerospace and military applications
Anglia has completed its compliance for the latest RoHS standard commonly referred to as RoHS 3. Anglia is shipping RoHS 3 compliant inventory to customers unless it has received a specific request for non-RoHS items such as those typically required for Military and Aerospace applications. Customers can now also download the updated RoHS 3 declaration for all applicable parts directly from Anglia Live.
Power supply manufacturer continues inward investment
TDK Corporation has announced further investments at its TDK Lambda UK manufacturing facility in Ilfracombe, North Devon. In addition to the £1m invested into the recently opened EMC centre, the company has invested £250k in new equipment and plans a further £590k within the next nine months.
Investment to increase display product range
Zytronic has recently invested over £350,000 into their Northeast manufacturing site. The upgrade to glass processing and storage equipment increases the range of products and design features offered to customers and streamlines operations.
