Helping miniaturise electronic control modules, power converters and motor drives, STMicroelectronics has introduced a family of automotive-qualified high-voltage ultrafast rectifiers. The devices' extremely low profile, light weight and -40 to +175°C operating temperature range support space-efficient vehicle electronics and equipment installed in harsh environments, such as mobile basestations and outdoor lighting.

Packaged as SMBFlat devices that weigh only 50mg, the rectifiers are 1mm thick - almost 60% thinner than the nearest competing rectifiers in standard 2.4mm thick SMB packages. This enables designers to create lighter and slimmer ECUs for mounting in small spaces within the vehicle. The package is also footprint-compatible with standard SMB devices, promoting ease of use in existing PCB designs.

The 10 ultrafast rectifiers introduced have current ratings from 1 to 3A and repetitive peak reverse voltage ratings of 600-1200V. The family includes L-series devices, which have low forward voltage for circuits requiring low conduction losses, and R-series devices with shorter reverse-recovery time. Enabling efficient operation at higher operating frequency, which allows the use of smaller external inductors and capacitors, fast reverse recovery minimises switching losses.

SMBFlat automotive-qualified rectifiers are available now, priced from $0.15 for the 1A/600V R-series STTH1R06UFY in 100 unit quantities.
