A German research alliance has developed the basis for smart, high resolution LED headlights which take adaptive forward lighting to a new dimension. The demonstration model was developed by overall project manager Osram in collaboration with the project partners Daimler, Fraunhofer, Hella and Infineon.

Devices provide low ON-resistance for load switch applications
Two compact, N-Channel MOSFETs for load switching in automotive applications have been announced by Toshiba. The 60V SSM3K341R and the 100V SSM3K361R deliver class leading low ON-resistance and are qualified according to the AEC-Q101 standard. As a result, they are suitable for use in power management, including DC/DC converter or load switch applications which are of increasing importance for the ever developing electronic systems in vehicles.

Linear current regulators drive automotive LED arrays
Designed to drive automotive LED arrays, two series of adjustable linear current regulators hve been announced by Allegro MicroSystems Europe. The AEC-Q100 qualified A6274 and A6284 low-EMI ICs integrate an optional pre-regulator gate drive to dynamically and linearly control an external P-channel MOSFET, which extends the output power capability of a linear LED driver by moving most of the power losses to an external power FET.

The S6BL112A automotive-grade LED driver is the industry’s first to feature synchronous control, which helps it provide industry-leading conversion efficiency, enabling stable performance in a lighting system.

After a slow increase of revenue from 2015 to 2018 due to LED cost erosion, Yole Développement’s analysts forecast a market recovery with a 23.7% CAGR between 2015 and 2021. This trends is explained by the wider adoption of advanced front lighting systems and the slow adoption of emerging light sources such as laser and OLED.

One chip solution for accurately monitoring headlamp output
In response to the emergence of laser-powered automotive front lighting systems, Melexis has optimised its MLX75305 series of advanced light sensor ICs. Each MLX75305 incorporates a photodiode, trans-impedance amplifier and output stage. Unlike competing devices on the market, it is fully AEC-Q100 qualified and supports an operational temperature range from -40C up to +125°C.

A Porsche has set the fastest lap time on the first day of practice for round two of the FIA WEC in Spa-Francorchamps. For the first time the two 919 Hybrids have run with the aerodynamic package which is designed for the Le Mans 24 Hours. The cars were designed with a newly-specified headlight system, provided by Osram.
