Providing a uniquely scalable terrestrial radio-receiver platform for car-radio applications, STMicroelectronics has introduced the STAR-T (TDA7707) and STAR-S (TDA7708) IC-tuner family. The devices enable manufacturers of car radios to maximise their product-development efficiency and minimise their final product cost.

For the first time, customers can develop a single hardware platform that addresses all car-radio segments and geographical regions - rather than designing multiple products that use different hardware and software combinations. The STAR family enables car radios from the simplest single-channel AM/FM to multi-tuner, multi-standard (DAB/HD-Radio/DRM-ready) architectures with a single PCB layout.

The two-channel TDA707 is a monolithic quad-band tuner that supports a variety of radio-receiver architectures including FM Phase Diversity, FM + Background FM/AM, and FM/AM + Background RDS/TMC. It can also support HD-Radio and DAB with an external co-processor. The single-channel TDA7708 offers full hardware (pin-to-pin) and software compatibility that allows easy scalability to two-channel systems.

Both devices feature DSP-intensive radio-signal processing for highest-quality reception in all field conditions and interface to external Digital Radio decoders. Evaluation kits and HW/SW documentation are available to minimise customers’ time-to-market.

Housed in a 9x9x0.85mm QFN64 package, samples of both STAR devices are available now, with volume production scheduled for 2016.
