RealVNC has announced a partnership with Cellcontrol to further enhance the safe integration of mobile devices with automotive infotainment systems. The aim is to improve operational safety and usability by restricting applications that can be accessed on the move, while also making it easy to set-up and customize mobile communications policies and permit fast and simple in-cabin navigation between allowed applications.
The solution is based on RealVNC’s VNC® Mobile Solution for Automotive which supports Terminal Mode, a specification based on VNC published by Consumer Electronics for Automotive (CE4A), an automotive industry working group comprising Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche and Volkswagen and Nokia. The specification proposes an industry standard for the seamless integration of mobile devices and applications with vehicle infotainment systems. The open-architecture Cellcontrol technology integrates seamlessly with VNC® Mobile Solution for Automotive to provide a critical management, access and control layer.

The combined solution will reduce the risk of driver distraction related to active screen replication of connected mobile devices. The core Cellcontrol technology was developed to restrict the use of mobile devices once a vehicle begins to move; this technology application extends that control capability to a Terminal Mode deployment using a mobile phone, smartphone, laptop or other handheld device. “Bringing together RealVNC’s leading remote access and control software for automotive applications with our advanced, customizable application control technology will enhance the user experience while also improving safety,” said Chuck Cox, CEO at Cellcontrol.

“Driver safety is paramount and by working with Cellcontrol, our customers can now benefit from an effective solution that addresses social and regulatory concerns related to driving while distracted but still enjoy the real benefits and productivity associated with VNC-enabled automotive platforms,” said Tom Blackie Vice President Mobile, RealVNC.
