Maxim introduced the latest member of its high-speed LVDS serializer family: the MAX9249 serializer with LVDS system interface. This serializer pairs with the MAX9260 deserializer to form a gigabit multimedia chipset that provides a complete bidirectional digital-video link over a single DC-balanced twisted-pair or differential line. Maxim's proprietary, differential, full-duplex control channel eliminates the need for an external CAN or LIN interface, thus simplifying design while saving space and cost. This approach enables bidirectional communication with the display module, as well as programming of camera settings through a UART/I2C interface on a frame-by-frame basis. The MAX9249/MAX9260 chipset is ideal for automotive infotainment and camera applications such as navigation, sign recognition, collision avoidance, night vision, and lane departure.
Additionally, the MAX9249/MAX9260 offer programmable spread-spectrum modulation to reduce EMI, making it easier to pass automotive compliance tests. This chipset allows isolation between the serializer and deserializer through AC-coupling, provides hot-swap capability to increase fault tolerance, and offers on-the-fly frequency programming. Line fault detection and integrated self-test features check for link integrity at system power-up.

The MAX9249 operates from a 1.8V core supply and features a separate input supply for interfacing to 1.8V to 3.3V logic levels. This serializer is packaged in a 7mm x 7mm, 48-pin TQFP and is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +105 degrees Celsius temperature range. Prices start at $5.25 (1000-up, FOB USA). Device data sheets, evaluation kits, and samples are available under NDA.
