Consumer demand for high-performance, smart connectivity is revolutionizing consumer in-car experiences and creating growth opportunities for silicon providers that offer automotive-grade products capable of meeting the rigorous demands of the automotive industry.

Underscoring this trend, Freescale Semiconductor announces that GM’s 15-year track record of utilizing Freescale silicon for the OnStar platform will continue. Freescale’s i.MX 6Solo applications processor has been selected as the primary processing engine for the next generation of GM’s groundbreaking OnStar telematics system.

The advanced security capabilities of the i.MX 6Solo product were key to its selection. As the era of connected intelligence boosts the volume of data flowing into and out of automobiles, the incorporation of processors that help protect the security of this important data grows increasingly vital to automakers and their customers.

“Freescale is pleased that our i.MX 6Solo device will play a defining role in helping advance GM’s world-class OnStar system,” said Bernd Lienhard, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Division. “This design win highlights Freescale’s leadership in delivering processing capabilities that meet and exceed the demanding requirements of the world’s top automakers.”

According to industry analyst firm iSuppli, the market for semiconductors deployed in automotive infotainment systems is expected to expand from $5.7 billion (USD) in 2010 to $8.4 billion (USD) in 2016.

OnStar’s continued use of Freescale silicon illustrates the strong market acceptance that Freescale’s popular and quickly expanding family of i.MX 6 series processors is experiencing within worldwide automotive markets. Single-, dual- and quad-core i.MX 6 series processors have been selected to power a variety of automotive infotainment/telematics platforms, from entry-level systems to highly advanced offerings that take in-vehicle communications to new levels.

Freescale’s scalable product offerings, legacy of automotive processing leadership and long track record of supplying embedded intelligence to the world’s top automotive OEMs have helped position its i.MX products as processors of choice for the infotainment and telematics markets. i.MX technology powers infotainment/telematics systems currently deployed by more than 10 world-class automotive OEMs.
