The power conversion specialist, Ideal Power, has announced the availability of a new range of Surge Suppression Modules (SSMs) from P-Duke. The SSM series products provide surge protection to protect DC/DC converter modules in railway applications. The SSMs can clamp input surge voltages to a safe level to protect DC/DC converters, and enable them to keep working.

They are rated to withstand a 385VDC input surge for 20ms, in compliance with the railway industry’s standard RIA12 for surge susceptibility. Operating input voltage can range from 43VDC to 160VDC, enabling the SSMs to be used with the 110V battery system commonly used in railways.

Jon Vallis, Sales and Marketing Manager at Ideal Power, said: “Railway applications have specific demands for surge protection, and these new modules meet the appropriate industry standards – ensuring reliable operation in harsh conditions.”

The new SSMs complement other products from Ideal Power for railway applications. One example is the RDL03W and RDL06W, also from P-Duke, which are two of the smallest railway DC/DC converters in the world. They are approved to the EN 50155 and EN 45545-2 railway standards, and provide three and six watt output power in a SIP8 package. They offer input voltage ranges of nine to 36, 18 to 75 and 43 to 160VDC, which are suitable for the 24, 48, 72, 96 and 110VDC voltages of each kind of railway power system.

There are three models in the SSM range: the SSM-110008-001 can handle power of up to 300W, the SSM-110004-001 is rated at 150W, and the SSM110P50-001 handles up to 20W. The SSM-110008-001 and SSM-110004-001 are provided in a compact package measuring 1.6x1x0.4”, while the SSM110P50-001 uses an industry-standard DIP24 package, measuring 1.25x0.8x0.4”.

The SSMs can be used across a wide range of operating ambient temperatures: from -40 to +105°C for the SSM-110008-001 and SSM-110004-001, and from -40 to +95°C for the SSM110P50-001.
