At this year’s electronica trade fair, Isabellenhütte presented its IPC Modular current measurement module for shunt-based phase current. Thanks to its compact dimensions (L/W/H: 46 mm/40.5 mm/21 mm), its high 16-bit resolution, and high-speed current measuring capacity of up to 20 Mbit/s (without filter), the module is designed to be used as control units for all manner of heavy-duty electrical drives. The IPC Modular is suitable for general industrial applications, but it can also be used for measuring current in AC/DC converters in drive systems as well as in UPS systems. The phase current measurement appliance has further uses in Automotive, in particular for converters in hybrid and electric cars, and in wind and solar power applications.

Isabellenhütte’s measurement appliance now has a new feature: it is available in modular form, i.e. users can select the specific parts they want to use. These are the power supply isolation, filter and communication units. In addition, users can configure the IPC Modular to suit their specific needs. If it is necessary to use an IPC module with a filter, the system can measure values from sources of up to approx. 75 Ksample/s; a 20 Mbit/s maximum is possible without filters. If desired, the IPC can also be fitted for overcurrent detection. Different options are available for communicating with the microcontroller, such as interfaces like RS-485 or an optical UART interface.

All IPC modules stand out thanks to their dynamic and highly accurate measurement capabilities. Depending on the shunt used, it can provide readings for continuous current ranging from 150 A to several thousand amperes. Its other advantages include reduced performance loss regarding low-resistance shunts, low offset and drift, and minimal noise.

Technical details of the IPC Modular:

Power supply: 5 V
Current measurement range: from 150 A to several thousand A
Measurement precision: up to 16 bit
Temperature range: - 40 °C to 125 °C, depending on
modularity
