Linear Technology announces the H-grade version of the LT3692A, a monolithic, dual output step-down switching regulator that delivers up to 3.5A of continuous output current from each channel. It operates from a VIN range of 3V to 36V with transient protection to 60V, making it ideal for load dump and cold-crank conditions found in automotive applications. Independent input, shutdown, feedback, soft-start, current limit and comparator pins for each channel simplify complex power supply tracking/sequencing requirements. The LT3692A’s switching frequency is user-programmable from 250kHz to 2.25MHz, enabling the designer to optimize efficiency while avoiding critical noise-sensitive frequency bands.

Linear Technology announces the H-grade version of the :LT3641, a dual channel, current mode step-down switching regulator with power-on reset and a watchdog timer. Its 4V to 42V input voltage range, with 55V transient capability, makes it ideal for load dump and cold crank conditions commonly found in automotive applications, which require constant output regulation even with input transients as high as 55V. The LT3641 uses a unique dual channel design with a high input voltage (4VIN to 42VIN, 55VIN transient capability) nonsynchronous channel that delivers 1.3A of output current, combined with a lower input voltage (2.5VIN to 5.5VIN) synchronous channel that delivers up to 1.1A of continuous output current. While the device allows separate inputs for each channel, most applications will use the output of the high voltage channel to power the lower voltage channel, offering dual outputs while optimizing efficiency and switching frequency. For example, using a nominal 12V input and a 2MHz switching frequency, the LT3641 can deliver a 3.3V output at 600mA with 85% efficiency via its high voltage channel and a 1.8V output at 800mA with 90% secondary conversion efficiency via its lower voltage channel.

Delphi Automotive will display its Wireless Device Charging System at the Consumer Electronics Show next week. Currently under development, the system transmits power over distance to deliver a charge without precise positioning of the electronic device receiving the charge. It would eliminate the clutter, inconvenience and distractions associated with multiple charging cords in the vehicle cabin and replace them with a safe, convenient and efficient automatic charging system.

The ISL78228 is a high efficiency, dual synchronous step-down DC/DC regulator that can deliver up to 800mA continuous output current per channel. The supply voltage range of 2.75V to 5.5V allows for the use of a 3.3V or 5V input. The current mode control architecture enables very low duty cycle operation at high frequency with fast transient response and excellent loop stability. The ISL78228 operates above the AM radio band as well as the 2.25MHz switching frequency, allowing for the use of small, low cost inductors and capacitors. Each channel is optimized for generating an output voltage as low as 0.6V.

Automotive grade high-current LED driver ICs

The A6265, A6266 and A6267 from Allegro MicroSystems Europe are a new family of automotive-grade, high-current LED driver ICs with extensive diagnostics and protection features. The new devices, which are fully qualified to the AEC-Q100 Grade 0 Automotive Specification, are DC-DC converter controllers, with the A6265/A6267 configurable as either boost or buck-boost converters and the A6266 as a boost converter only.

Intersil Corporation today introduced a space-saving, AEC-Q100-qualified dual synchronous step-down DC/DC regulator featuring a 2.25MHz switching frequency to minimize solution size. The ISL78228 dual step-down DC/DC regulator provides two independent 800mA outputs. Its 3mm x 3mm package and 2.25MHz switching frequency enables very small power solutions for a variety of space-constrained automotive and industrial applications. A 2.75V to 5.5V input voltage range permits powering from common 3.3V or 5V automotive module supply rails. Internal current-mode compensation provides fast transient response, allowing 100% duty cycle for low dropout and eliminates the need for external compensation components.
