The organiser of the electric car championship, Formula E, has announced that it will introduce a driverless championship in 2016, with the aim of creating a competitive shop window for the driverless systems being developed by many large industrial automotive and technology players as well as top tech universities.

Taking place in the same cities and on the same circuits as the Formula E races, including Battersea Park in London, the driverless championship, dubbed ROBORACE, is set to be a celebration of revolutionary technology and innovation.

Formula E has been in operation for two years and it is thought by some, including Richard Branson, that it could even rival Formula 1 in four or five years.

The ROBORACE will commence with the 2016-2017 season, with each one hour event taking place directly before all the ‘regular’ Formula E races. To get the series off the ground, Formula E teamed-up with Kinetik, a company specialising in developing new technologies.

It is thought that the ROBORACE cars could reach top speeds in excess of 300kph, or 186mph. Ten teams, each with two driverless cars, will compete over the full championship season. All the teams will have the same cars but will compete using real time computing algorithms and AI technologies.

One of the race teams will be organised as a crowd sourced community team, open for enthusiastic software and technology experts all over the world.

Further support for both Formula E and ROBORACE will come from Charge, an automotive start-up founded by Kinetik, that develops range extended electric powertrains for commercial vehicles.
