Cadence Design Systems has announced that GEO Semiconductor selected the Cadence Tensilica Vision P5 DSP for GEO’s new GW5400 camera video processor. According to GEO, their GW5400 is the world’s first automotive smart viewing processor.

Enabled by the Vision P5 DSP, the GW5400 features in-camera computer vision to provide Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) functionality. By integrating the Vision P5 DSP, the GW5400 is able to run computer vision applications on the same cameras used for viewing applications on the vehicle.

As the GW5400’s computer vision processor, the Vision P5 DSP runs a wide range of vision algorithms. The Vision P5 DSP and associated library functions enable ADAS capabilities such as pedestrian detection, object detection, blind spot detection, cross traffic alert, driver attention monitoring and lane departure warning, as well as target-less auto calibration in a low power, zero-air-flow environment.

Highly energy efficient, the Vision P5 DSP offers 4X-100X the performance for a variety of pixel operations relative to traditional mobile CPU-plus-GPU systems at a fraction of the power/energy. This combination of high performance and power efficiency (performance per milliwatt) enables the Vision P5 DSP to process right on the edge, delivering richer, real time experiences using computer vision algorithms.

In contrast, GPU- and CPU-based processors cannot deliver the thermal efficiency offered by the Vision P5 DSP, so they are unable to deliver these experiences right on the edge.

“The Tensilica Vision P5 DSP core provides the low energy and high efficiency required to meet the desired performance target for our computer vision applications,” said Kent Goodin, Vice President of Hardware Engineering at GEO.

“Cadence’s software tools and library enabled us to integrate the high quality Vision P5 DSP easily, reducing our development time and enabling us to achieve first silicon success for our automotive camera video processor SoC.”

“GEO is an important Tensilica customer, and their flagship GW5400 camera vision processor raises the bar for on-the-edge driver-assistance features,” said Pulin Desai, Product Marketing Director for the Tensilica Vision DSP product line at Cadence.

“Tensilica Vision processors enable computer vision capability critical for ADAS applications, and GEO’s selection of the Vision P5 DSP validates its status as the DSP of choice where low power and high performance are required for stringent automotive conditions.”

The Tensilica Vision DSP family addresses a wide range of markets, offering general-purpose imaging and vision DSPs for complex imaging and computer vision algorithms, as well as dedicated neural network processors.

The next generation in the Vision product line, the Vision P6 DSP, is designed for general-purpose imaging and occasional-use AI / neural network inference, offering four times the peak performance compared to the Vision P5 DSP. The Vision C5 is a standalone, self-contained neural network IP core designed for heavy duty, always-on AI / neural network inference.
