Due to the success of AUTOSAR as the key software technology in the automotive industries worldwide, the AUTOSAR (AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture) Development Partnership has decided on an important extension of the AUTOSAR standard to non-automotive areas. The Core Partners have already signed the amendment to the development agreement allowing the application of AUTOSAR in the field of so-called “derived applications”, which must be derived from a commercially available and proven in use automotive application. After approval by all AUTOSAR members, the derived applications will be applied in different technical fields such as railway, agriculture and forestry machinery, construction machinery, compressors, pumps or power generators and marine including military transportation vessels. The adoption of derived applications is ruled out in the fields of aviation, aerospace, nuclear power, chemical and biological reactors and in the petrochemical and military sectors and more generally for ultra hazardous applications.

Several Core Partners and other members of the development partnership are developing their technologies for other sectors besides the automotive industry. Until now, the AUTOSAR agreements strictly limited the license for commercial exploitation to automotive applications. Examples of these are electronic control units (ECUs) developed for the automotive industry which can easily be adapted to other industrial domains. This remarkable extension of the scope of applications will open new markets for AUTOSAR products.
