A £16 million programme to help make the UK’s advanced automotive manufacturing supply chain more competitive was launched by Business Secretary, Greg Clark. SMMT Industry Forum, the organisation set up by the UK government, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and vehicle manufacturers to improve the competitiveness of the UK’s automotive supply chain, is to play an important role in the new initiative.

Underlining the societal benefits of connected cars, particularly for the disadvantaged, is the new report from SMMT. Penny Searles, CEO of Smartdriverclub, the connected car service for used cars said:  “These findings really validate all the reasons I set up Smartdriverclub.  However, the benefits of connectivity are only enjoyed right now by a small minority of motorists who can afford the newest cars on our roads.  That’s just not fair.”

UK automotive manufacturing output for the first quarter of 2011 was up across the board though the global impact of Japan’s earthquake was felt sharply here during the course of April. Car output fell 12.2%, commercial vehicle fell 19.9% and UK engine production dropped 4.7%.
