Synchronous step-down switching regulator offers 94% efficiency
A dual 4A, 42V input synchronous step-down switching regulator has been announced by Analog Devices, which recently acquired Linear Technology. The LT8650S's Silent Switcher2 architecture uses four internal input capacitors as well as two internal BST and a single INTVCC capacitor to minimise the area of the hot loops. Combined with well controlled switching edges and an internal construction using copper pillars in lieu of bond wires and an integral ground plane, the LT8650S’s design reduces EMI emissions.

Analog Devices, which recently acquired Linear Technology, has demonstrated the industry’s first wireless automotive BMS concept car at Hannover Messe April 24 - 28 in Booth H23. This wireless BMS concept car, developed with Linear’s design partner LION Smart, combines Linear’s highly accurate battery stack monitors with its SmartMesh wireless mesh networking products in a BMW i3, replacing the traditional wired connections between the battery packs and the battery management system.

The LTC3871, a 100V/30V bidirectional two phase synchronous buck or boost controller, ideal for 48V/12V automotive dual battery systems has been announced by Linear Technology. Current 12V automotive systems are reaching their 3kW power limit due to the ever-increasing demand for more electrical devices. A newly proposed standard, LV148, combines a secondary 48V bus with the existing 12V system.

The new LT8608 from Linear Technology is a 1.5A, 42V input synchronous step-down switching regulator with synchronous rectification topology that delivers 93% efficiency while switching at 2MHz. This enables designers to avoid critical noise sensitive frequency bands, such as AM radio, while using a very compact solution footprint. Burst Mode operation keeps quiescent current under 2.5µA in no-load standby conditions making it well suited for always-on systems.

A 400mA, 40V step-down switching regulator with dual tracking LDO outputs has been released by Linear Technology. Operating from a VIN range of 4.3-40V with transient protection to 60V, the LT3668 is particularly suitable for automotive and industrial applications. Up to 400mA can be delivered by the internal 600mA switch and distributed to the combined loads of the primary output and both of the tracking LDOs.
