Automotive and IoT will drive IC growth up until 2021
According to IC Insights’ new 2018 Integrated Circuit Market Drivers Report, integrated circuit sales for automotive systems and the IoT are forecast to grow 70% faster than total IC revenues between 2016 and 2021. ICs used in automobiles and other vehicles are forecast to generate worldwide sales of $42.9bn in 2021 compared to $22.9bn in 2016, while integrated circuit revenues for IoT functionality in a wide range of systems, sensors, and objects are expected to reach $34.2bn in four years compared to $18.4bn last year, says the new 358-page report.

Automotive electronic systems market just keeps growing
According to data presented in the 2018 edition of the IC Insights’ IC Market Drivers - A Study of Key System Applications Fueling Demand for Integrated Circuits that will be released later this year, automotive electronic system sales are forecast to rise by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.4% from 2016 through 2021, which is the highest among six major end-use system categories (Figure 1).

Automotive IC market on track to be worth $28bn in 2017
Each year, new cars are being equipped with electronic systems that improve vehicle performance; that add comfort and convenience; and that warn, detect, and take corrective measures to keep drivers safe and alert. Consumer demand and government mandates for many of these new systems, along with rising prices for many IC components within them, are expected to raise the automotive IC market 22% this year to a new record high of $28.0bn (Figure 1).

IoT and automotive to drive IC market growth through 2020

Integrated circuit sales for connections to the IoT are forecast to grow more than three times faster than total IC revenues during the last half of this decade, according to IC Insights’ 2017 Integrated Circuit Market Drivers report. ICs used to embed IoT functionality into a wide range of systems, sensors, and objects are expected to generate sales of $12.8bn in 2016, says the new report, which becomes available this week.

Automotive systems forecast to show strongest growth through 2020

IC Insights will release the 2017 edition of its IC Market Drivers Report later this month. The newly updated report reviews many of the end-use system applications that are presently impacting and that are forecast to help propel the IC market through 2020. IC Market Drivers 2017 shows that the market for automotive electronic systems is expected to display the strongest cumulative average growth rate (CAGR) through 2020, at 4.9%, highest among the six main electronic system categories.

Samsung Invests Big to Maintain Leadership
Samsung recently announced plans to build a new, cutting-edge wafer fab—a $14.7 billion investment for the company that will be located in Pyeongtaek, a city south of Seoul.  The new fab, slated to begin production in 2H17, will add to Samsung’s current impressive compilation of wafer fabs (Figure 1) as it seeks to maintain its leading position in memory IC sales and expand its system leadership beyond smartphones, Smart TVs, and tablets.  Investing large is not new to Samsung—it has allocated at least $10 billion per year on semiconductor capital expenditures since 2010 (Figure 2), and has accounted for 17-21% of total industry capital expenditures each year since then.

Communications and Auto to Out-Pace IC Market Growth Through 2016

14.1% CAGR for communications tops growth rate among major end-use system segments The communications and automotive IC markets are forecast to out-pace the growth of the total IC market through 2016 according to data in IC Insights’ soon-to-be-released IC Market Drivers 2013 — A Study of Emerging and Major End-Use Applications Fueling Demand for Integrated Circuits. The communications segment is forecast to see a cumulative average annual growth rate of 14.1% from 2011-2016, almost double the 7.4% CAGR expected for the entire IC market during this timeframe. The automotive IC market is also expected to exceed total IC market growth during this period, growing at an average annual rate of 9.0% (Figure 1).
