New Automatic Climate Control In The BMW 3 Series Operates Using Advanced Thermal Management

New Automatic Climate Control In The BMW 3 Series Operates Using Advanced Thermal Management
For a long time, motorists regarded air conditioning merely as a guarantee of a cool workplace when behind the wheel. During the early 1980s, the optional extra was predominantly ordered as protection against the midsummer heat inside the car, true to the motto: the heat has to stay out, irrespective of how hot the sun is. The greater the refrigerator feeling experienced by occupants was, the more effective an air conditioning system was considered to be.

BMW EfficientDynamics means ongoing research. Exhaust heat offers the greatest potential for the future.

BMW EfficientDynamics means ongoing research. Exhaust heat offers the greatest potential for the future.
Even the most efficient internal combustion engine can only convert about one-third of the energy derived from fossil fuels into the mechanical kinetic energy needed to power a motor vehicle. Over the past few years BMW EfficientDynamics has made great improvements in engine efficiency, for example with technologies such as direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, exhaust-driven turbochargers, brake energy regeneration and the Auto Start Stop function. However, about 60 percent of the generated energy is still lost, half of it being exhaust heat, with the remaining half as heat absorbed by the engine cooling system. Finding ways of recovering this lost heat energy is one of the major goals being pursued by engineers working on BMW EfficientDynamics for the future. That is why the BMW Group is involved in several projects, each with different approaches to utilising dissipated heat energy, and at various levels – in research, pre-production and series development. Among the most promising innovations are the turbosteamer, thermoelectric generator, engine encapsulation and a waste heat exchanger for oil heating.

The New BMW Range: More Driver Enjoyment With Even Greater Efficiency
With the all-important UK business market in mind, BMW engineers have created a car that is approximately 10 per cent more fuel-efficient than the best its rivals can muster, without reducing the 184hp or 380Nm of torque developed by the 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine. This equates to fuel economy of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of 119g/km, which means a company car benefit-in-kind taxation band of only 13 per cent.
