Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled its XJ_e engineering research vehicle at the Goodwood Festival of Speed – an experimental plug-in hybrid version of its luxury Jaguar XJ saloon, powered by Axeon. The battery provides the Jaguar XJ_e with a range of up to 40 km (25 miles) on electric power.

Spanish firm Hiriko has chosen Axeon, Europe’s largest independent supplier of lithium-ion battery systems, to supply batteries for its prototype electric vehicles.

Axeon has signed a collaboration and supply agreement with advanced lithium-ion battery manufacturer, A123 Systems. The companies will work together on specific electric vehicle customer programmes.

Axeon will supply two prototype batteries for a TSB grant-assisted project to develop a concept for a Hybrid electric vehicle.

A project led by advanced battery manufacturer Axeon and co-funded by the Technology Strategy Board has been successful in developing a new battery for use in electric cars that offers over a 35% improvement in range compared to existing technologies, for the same weight.

Axeon is one of six British companies to receive a share of nearly £500,000 funding from the Technology Strategy Board for feasibility studies into the recycling and re-use of batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. As well as researching the recycling process, the project will look at how to determine end-of-life, which is still a major issue with automotive batteries for both manufacturers and consumers.

Axeon has worked closely with Jaguar Land Rover South Africa to produce an all-electric version of its iconic Defender model for use in game parks, minimising both environmental and noise pollution.

Vince Cable, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills, and Business Minister, Mark Prisk, were yesterday brought up to speed on Axeon’s industry-leading battery technology for electric vehicles, on display in the Low Carbon vehicle exhibition at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Axeon has been awarded research funding from the EU to dramatically reduce the weight, volume and cost of batteries in electric and hybrid vehicles as part of a consortium programme called SmartBatt.

A specially designed battery system – the largest ever for a passenger car – produced by Axeon will power 102EX, the Rolls-Royce Phantom Experimental Electric which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show last week.

A European automotive manufacturer has sought the expertise of UK-based lithium-ion energy systems supplier, Axeon, and automotive technology, innovation and systems integration provider, Ricardo, to supply and integrate an advanced, lightweight battery pack for a pioneering plug-in hybrid vehicle, which is guaranteed to grab worldwide headlines when it is launched.
