SMSC a leading semiconductor company providing Smart Mixed-Signal Connectivity solutions, today announced that its Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) networking technology has been selected as part of the infotainment system for the second generation of the popular Volkswagen Touareg SUV. Worldwide MOST has been adopted in over 85 vehicle models on the road today.
MOST has been the infotainment network of choice for most European luxury car makers over the last decade, said Dr. Christian Thiel, Vice President and General Manager of SMSC's Automotive Information Systems group. Volkswagen's MOST decision effectively shows that this technology is following the adoption scheme of many technologies in the automobile that are initially introduced by the luxury makers but as cost comes down and supply chain know-how increases, find their way into the more volume market oriented car makers. We look forward to continuing to proliferate MOST into additional Volkswagen models as they seek to enhance the in-vehicle entertainment experience for their customers.
MOST multimedia networking technology enables the networking of feature-rich infotainment systems in automobiles by providing the means to distribute multimedia entertainment functions among the various control devices around the car. For example, a CD changer, radio, global positioning system, mobile telephone and DVD player can be established in an efficient ring network and can send crisp, static-free audio signals digitally to the amplifier by utilizing the MOST network.
