Due to increasingly stringent exhaust-gas standards around the world, exhaust-gas treatment based on SCR technology is also increasingly in use in the commercial vehicle segment. At its Hallein plant in Austria, Bosch has now produced its one millionth Denoxtronic exhaust-gas treatment system. In combination with an SCR catalyst (Selective Catalytic Reduction), the AdBlue metering system reduces nitrogen-oxide emissions from a commercial vehicle’s diesel engine by up to 95 percent. The exhaust-gas treatment system also allows the engine to be configured to reduce fuel consumption, with the result that CO2 emissions fall by approximately three percent.
Continuous further development
In the SCR method, the Denoxtronic’s metering module injects the AdBlue water-urea solution into the exhaust-gas flow at exactly the right mixture. This mixture is computed on the basis of data from the engine electronics, such as engine speed or operating temperature. Ammonia is produced, which reacts with the nitrogen oxides in the SCR catalyst to produce harmless nitrogen and water. The system first went into series production in heavy commercial vehicles in Europe and Japan in 2004, and has been continuously developed since then. The second Denoxtronic generation was introduced in 2006. It injects the AdBlue into the exhaust-gas flow upstream of the SCR catalyst in such a fine spray that complicated compressed-air support is no longer required. In 2008, Denoxtronic went into use in the off-highway segment for the first time, when it was installed in Massey Ferguson tractors. The current Denoxtronic 2.2 generation is available for either 12 or 24 volt onboard systems, and is used in the on- and off-highway segment. For the requirements of light commercial vehicles and passenger cars, Bosch has had a modified version of the Denoxtronic in its portfolio since 2008. This version won the “Eco Globe” environmental award in the “Supplier Innovation” category.

Denoxtronic – robust and flexible in use
With its long service life, this highly robust system truly stands out from the crowd. Thanks to its modular setup, it can also be flexibly and easily integrated into numerous commercial vehicle models. Depending on customers’ needs, the Denoxtronic‘s electronic control system can be integrated into the engine control unit, or alternatively into a separate metering control unit.
