Stockholm’s public transport system, Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL), has seen a 25% reduction in crime and a 60% decrease in theft following the deployment of a comprehensive surveillance network. Axis Communications, the global leader in network video, through the addition of almost 4,000 network security cameras, has helped improve the safety and security of staff and commuters throughout the network.

This ensures access to industry-leading technologies such as Zipstream data compression, difficult light-level monitoring and Power over Ethernet (PoE), enabling surveillance in remote areas and resulting in better accident prevention and intelligent footfall monitoring.

The significant reduction in criminal acts is favourable when compared to the 5% increase in pan-modal crime registered by Transport for London (TfL) for Q2 2016. This highlights a clear correlation between a greater number of security cameras deployed and crime levels, with SL’s latest installations helping combat pickpocketing and theft, while assisting police with criminal investigations.

“Everything must work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The cameras need to be easy to install, scalable, based on an open standard, future-proof and adaptable to tomorrow’s technology,” states Kicki Roos, System Manager at Stockholm Public Transport. “Axis security cameras help us to achieve this. They have excellent image quality and are durable, reliable and easy to handle, providing great support in our efforts to combat crime and vandalism.”

Due to the size of the installation, a vast amount of data is generated for processing and storage. Through Axis’ Zipstream technology, bandwidth and storage requirements are reduced by an average of 50%. Furthermore, the addition of Axis’ Wide Dynamic Range technology has solved a major challenge within transport. Fluctuating light levels have traditionally resulted in poor, indistinguishable images, due to both overly light and dark sections. This technology means that detailed surveillance can continue day and night in central Stockholm through the use of image optimisation algorithms.

“For optimal security within transportation, cameras must provide a reliable, detailed overview of large areas and the commuters within them, as well as a wide angle designed to eliminate blind spots,” states Atul Rajput, Regional Director of Northern Europe at Axis Communications. “Axis’ range of intelligent security solutions go further than this, supporting business intelligence via a number of analytic and smart applications, such as viewing patterns of movement and identifying aggressive behaviour.”

“With high resolution, sharp image quality and superior adaptation to varying light conditions, the technology ensures all passengers can continue to travel safely, and is contributing to a reduction in crimes common to subway systems, such as vandalism, graffiti, pickpocketing and theft.”
