Designed for a high profile German customer, this coupling system demonstrates a custom solution for the control of automatic rail coupling. Its design is based on the customer’s required performance, modeled with a dynamic simulation software package. The solution surpassed system response times and dynamic performance, exceeding customer expectations.

This solution offers a fail-safe actuation of the coupling function through a series of circuits designed to ensure all actuation signals are present before actuation can occur.

In addition to the safety characteristics, the solution offers driver controls allowing for full control of the duration of the coupling cycle. This is achieved with the use of adjustable flow restriction and a small volume. This was calculated to offer the range of adjustment required with the minimum volume, therefore keeping system size as small as possible.

Components used on the system are vibration tested and are fully compliant with EC 61373:1999 Cat 1. The operating temperature range has also been extended to meet the environmental requirements and wide voltage tolerance to allow for the vehicle voltage variances.

As with all Parker KVD systems and solutions, the design is compact, the pipe connections have been reduced and the units are delivered to the customer 100% tested. The porting configuration is also in line with the customer’s requirements so that the system interfaces directly with the customer’s vehicle systems.

Importantly, all materials and components are fully in line with the requirements of the Rail Industry. This plug & play solution features lower power and air consumption on the vehicle from Parker products. Due to the size and weight reduction of the module, the customer has received some considerable cost reductions.

A range of other important pneumatic systems for the Rail Sector will also be exhibited in Berlin and each single one has its own story to tell.

By developing partnerships with its customers from the very concept of a new product or application, Parker KV Division is able to invest the time and the engineering design resource to meet solution objectives. It designs and produces custom compact electro-pneumatic, fluidic and fully integrated systems, mainly for the Transportation, Life Science and Automation market segments.
