In-wheel motors highlighted at the Drives & Controls show

In-wheel motors offer a number of advantages for electric vehicles such as AGVs on the shop floor and even passengers cars. One such motor being exhibited at the Drives and Controls show is the compact and very powerful XR32-11 from Printed Motor Works.

This three-phase brushless DC motor has a pancake profile and has been developed by PMW to fit inside the wheel rims of an electric car. Custom designed, the direct drive unit delivers unparalleled performance relative to its size, producing a peak torque of 160Nm while weighing only 17 kg.

The permanent magnets are positioned on an externally running rotor so that torque is delivered on the outer-most section of the motor. In addition, torque density is maximised by a high degree of slot fill by winding each of the stator teeth individually before assembly.

Also on show is PMW's XR15 series. Designed for volume applications, these brushless DC motors deliver high performance in a very compact package. Applications include door actuators, conveyor belts, stair lifts, medical centrifuges and in-wheel motor drives for robots.

A high performance hollow bore motor is also on the PMW stand. The IR9 is another permanent magnet, brushless DC motor, but with a conventional internal rotor design. Dovetailed NdFeB magnets ensure superior performance and an extended service life. The large hollow bore can be used for mounting on shafts or to transfer data, liquids or power along the axis of the motor.

PMW can rapidly adapt these and any other of its motors to match customers' requirements for torque, speed, duty cycle, temperature and cooling. Prototypes can be manufactured from client specifications in as little as three to four months.
