A Porsche has set the fastest lap time on the first day of practice for round two of the FIA WEC in Spa-Francorchamps. For the first time the two 919 Hybrids have run with the aerodynamic package which is designed for the Le Mans 24 Hours. The cars were designed with a newly-specified headlight system, provided by Osram.

The much anticipated European Football Championships will kick-off in France next month when the host nation open the tournament against Romania. The 2016 event will be the first time the competition has been expanded to include 24 teams and, as such, will consist of a number of Euro debutants such as Wales, Albania and Iceland. One of the favourites for the tournament however, will be three time winners and current world champions Germany.

Osram MultiLEDs give automobile designers even more options
Colors are playing an increasingly important role in the automotive sector. Now it's not only the exterior color of the vehicle that you can choose, you can also tailor the interior lighting to your individual taste. Thanks to the very wide blue color range of the new RGB MultiLED, lighting designers have a free choice of colors for ambient lighting, including customer-specific colors. Color design now covers cluster lighting to an increasing extent, notably in combined instruments such as speedometers and rev counters, in displays, as backlighting for switches and for ambient lighting. Vehicles are therefore becoming objects of individual design.

Research project focuses on adaptive forward lighting systems to increase driver and passenger safety. Adaptive forward lighting, in other words, glare-free camera-controlled headlamps that react instantly to changing conditions at night, will be helping to keep drivers and their passengers safer, as a consortium of high-tech automotive heavyweights design and build additional intelligent functions. The key to this complex functionality is the integration of microelectronics and optoelectronics – one of the principal aspects of the research project sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (FMER). Osram Opto Semiconductors has fitted its LED products in the Innovation Truck, which demonstrates to visitors the latest highlights of innovation at Siemens. The “Inno-Truck” is a project involving the Technical University of Munich and various partners from industry. The purpose of the truck is to demonstrate innovative approaches to electro-mobility, building systems, networking and energy distribution. The high-tech company’s energy efficient LEDs with high luminous intensity already are used widely as light sources in both conventional vehicles and innovative electric cars.

Oslon Black Flat LED for automotive front lighting offers low thermal resistance and high light output at high currents

The new Oslon Black Flat LED from Osram Opto Semiconductors is a high-performance light source for automotive front lighting systems that offers high light output at high currents, uniform light distribution, thermal stability and exceptionally good contrast for seeing and being seen. Equipped with state-of-the-art chip and packaging technology and a ceramic converter (part of Osram’s new C2 Ceramic Conversion Technology), this new LED is the latest addition to Osram’s Oslon Black series of compact, robust LEDs for automotive and industrial applications. It was introduced as a prototype in September 2011 at the International Symposium on Automotive Lighting and is now commercially available.

Osram has built a new web-based smart phone app for designers of exterior automotive lighting called the Automotive Signal LED Selector. Available for the iPhone, Android or Blackberry OS, or any device with a web browser, this new tool provides lighting designers and engineers with a mobile, convenient and easy-to-use tool to select the correct LEDs for their applications.

Student Designers at College for Creative Studies Partner with Visteon, OSRAM on Future Vehicle Lighting Concepts

When education and practical application merge, the results can be astounding. That was the aim of the College for Creative Studies (CCS), Visteon and OSRAM in their collaboration during the 2011/2012 academic year. As part of CCS’s ongoing Corporate Sponsorship program, 18 CCS Transportation Design Seniors researched areas of innovation focused on the development of new exterior automotive lighting and styling concepts with representatives from Visteon and OSRAM.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors showcased two new LED prototypes for headlights in the shape of the OSLON Black Flat and the OSRAM OSTAR Headlamp Pro. Both combine new chip and package technologies and are equipped with a ceramic converter. Their strengths include high light output even at high currents, a uniform light pattern, thermal stability and a particularly good contrast ratio
