Infineon Technologies announced its new SLI 76 “in Car” family of microcontrollers for the use in automotive Machine-to-Machine (M2M) systems. They are the industry’s first UICC (Universal Integrated Circuit Card) microcontrollers that are qualified by the stringent processes of the Automotive Electronics Council (AEC) Q100 quality standard. The SLI 76 “in Car” chips offer long lifetime, high data retention, extended temperature range, and cycle endurance.
The SLI 76 devices make it possible for automotive industry suppliers to readily meet quality requirements of vehicle manufacturers implementing advance in-car services such as emergency call (e-Call), remote unlock, fleet management and vehicle tracking. To address the AEC Q100 standard, Infineon manufactures the SLI 76 family in a high reliability process and delivers the components with documentation according to the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP).

Market researchers estimate that within five years one out of two new cars will have M2M services. With the introduction of the SLI 76 “in Car” family Infineon targets all relevant M2M automotive applications in this emerging market, leveraging from its innovative and industry leading smart card microcontroller technology combined with sophisticated quality measures based on Infineon’s expertise and worldwide market leadership position in automotive IC supply.

“Automotive component suppliers developing M2M systems need UICC microcontrollers qualified to automotive standards. Until today the related automotive specified hardware was not available,” said Dr. Helmut Gassel, President of the Chip Card & Security Division at Infineon Technologies. “The introduction of the SLI 76 ’in Car’ family once again underlines Infineon’s technology leadership and paves the way for a growing business segment with an automotive tailored UICC microcontroller product line.”

In addition to manufacturing on its highly reliable production process, Infineon implements statistical analysis and control systems defined by the AEC Q100 standard assuring that quality data can easily be interpreted by automotive customers. Intensive screening and testing was implemented to reduce the number of potential defects. All these measures result in improved robustness in a temperature range of -40 °C to 105 °C and longevity up to 17 years. In addition, SLI 76 devices are accompanied with PPAP documentation to present product quality information according to common needs of the automotive industry.

UICC software developed for existing Infineon product families can easily be migrated to the new SLI 76 ”in Car” family, as it is compatible to the previous SLE 76 and SLM 76 families. With soldering package VQFN-8 (Very thin profile Quad Flat Non-leaded) according to ETSI TS 102 671 MFF2 and JEDEC SON-8, the SLI 76 family meets production needs of automotive components manufacturers.

Availability

First samples of the SLI 76 M2M UICC microcontrollers are available. SLI 76 “in Car” products will be demonstrated at the “Cartes & Identification” Trade Show at EUROSMART, the international Smart Security Industry association, at Booth #3D 126 in Hall 3 (Paris-Nord, Villepinte Exhibition Centre, December 7-10, 2010). The roll-out of the family is planned for the first half of 2011. The family members differ in memory configuration with EEPROM sizes ranging from 256 kilobytes (KB) to 504 KB.
